Lens Help

I booked my first wedding for 2012!!

...now what?

I have a Canon Rebel XS 10.1mp Digital SLR Camera and the following lenses:

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f 3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens

Canon EF 50mm f 1.8 II Lens

I just had two more clients contact me regarding their interest in hiring me to shoot their upcoming weddings, so I clearly need to add some new lenses to my photography arsenal. Here are my questions:

Which Wide Angle Zoom Lens?

Question: Are Sigmas comparable to Canons?

Which Macro Lens?

Which Telephoto Zoom Lens?

{Same Lens, but sold for 1/3 the price on ebay}

Question: Is it safe to buy lenses on ebay if it says they are "new and in original packaging"?

I think those are all of my questions...for now ;).
Thank you in advance for your helpful comments and suggestions!

New Follower! I'm a newbie to camera's and lenses. I also want a wide angle really bad! Congrats on your upcoming wedding bookings! You do an amazing job!

Hi Natalie! Congratulations on your success, and thanks for the kind words on my blog! I'd strongly consider the 24-70L out of all the lenses you mentioned, as that has the versatility and focal range that can help you cover an entire wedding. You'll want a longer zoom eventually, but that lens should suffice to start. Alternatively, you might want to think about upgrading your camera body to something like a 50D which could help with noise at higher ISOs, then work on your lens stash. Glad to see you're rocking the nifty fifty, though!

Thanks for the nice note on my blog. I would say hands down 24-70 2.8. I also would say even though it takes a little longer to save go for the good stuff. I have the Nikon but I see you have Cannon so I would buy the canon lens if I were you. Good Luck with your decisions. Great pictures :)

Hey girl!, my thinking for the wedding is a 24-70mm also. You can get that great wide angle and also do some zooming and portrait. Tamron makes a comparable lens to the canon if you are looking for a better price point.

Congrats on all of the new business! That is so exciting! =)

Hi there,
Thanks for stopping by recently. I hope you also went over to my friend's blog who is having the Giveaway (link at the bottom of my Post). Didn't want you to miss out.
I wish I knew about lenses, but alas...just a point and shoot Cannon for me. Good luck with your upcoming Wedding shoots. : )

Hi, thanks for your comment on my blog :). You asked for some assistance with lens choices! For starters, I use all Nikon gear and only have prime lenses (fixed focal length, not zoom). The reason why I use prime lenses are that they are awesome quality, you can get better apertures (eg. f2, f1.8 etc) they are cheaper to buy and they aren't as heavy as zoom lenses. When you spend a whole day shooting a wedding, large zoom lenses can become rather cumbersome. I have a 24mm f2 lens, a 50mm f1.8 and a 105mm f2.8 (macro) lens and the one that I use the most is the 50mm. I was always advised by my teachers to stick with Nikon lenses and don't go with Tamron or Sigma, but I suppose if you are unable to afford Canon lenses it probably makes sense to purchase those brands :). You have a good start is already having a fantastic quality 50mm lens - I promise it will be the one that you use the most. The next would be a longer lens (I love my 105mm next for beautiful close up) :). Good luck with your wedding! Thanks, Leah :).

congrats dear on the upcoming wedding. I am sure you will do great! as far as lens, I use the 50mm ALOT so it's good that you have that already.

My next purchase will probably be the 50mm 1.4 since a friend recommended it and amazon has such great reviews on it. I don't own any wider lens so cant help you on that :/

That's so exciting you booked your first wedding! Congrats!

From my little experience with shooting weddings, I would recommend getting the Canon 70-200mm 2.8. I have rented it 3 times and I love it. If I decided to do weddings seriously I would buy it. It's a must-need for shooting the ceremony.

I'm not very familiar with other brands besides Canon but if you can't afford to buy all the lenses you want now, rent them here: borrowlenses.com. Hope that helps! Good luck!

yes, the Canon EF 70-200mm f 4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens is totally on my wish list as well - but oh baby it is pricey!!

That is so awesome you have been booked to take photos!! Best wishes for spectacular photos !!

I'm not sure what lens to recommend - I just use my 28-300mm mostly - but sometimes my 50mm (1.4) if I get sick of lugging around a heavy camera all day. I would love the above mentioned but am really saving my money for a new camera not a new lens (Canon EOS 7D)
